Is Dignity Health still Catholic? ›

Although Dignity Health is not a Catholic institution, the organization owned and operated 24 Catholic hospitals. While overall fiscal responsibility for these hospitals rests with the Board of Directors, certain reserve rights are still held by the religious orders that founded them.

They have too often faced discrimination in health care, and Dignity Health is committed to nondiscrimination in the care we offer all Californians: We serve all patients regardless of background, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Dignity Health is a lawsuit filed against a Dignity Health medical center for withholding medical care because of a patient's gender identity, amounting to sex discrimination in violation of California's Unruh Civil Rights Act.

Today, Dignity Health is one of the largest health system in the nation with 400 care sites across a 22 state network, including 39 hospitals - 24 of which are Catholic and 15 are other-than-Catholic. The mission and values we were founded upon remain the same.
